Tracking COVID-19: 138 new cases reported in McKinney this week

There have been 36 total deaths in McKinney related to COVID-19, a rate of 1.38%.

On Aug. 21, the city of McKinney paused its daily reports following Collin County's shift to reporting only raw data from the state. The county has since decided to share some data at the city level again and is working with the state to resolve issues of "confidence" with the accuracy of its reporting, according to an Aug. 24 post by Collin County Judge Chris Hill.

A group of dedicated investigators launched by the Texas Department of State Health Services was expected to begin working through the backlog of Collin County's COVID-19 active cases Aug. 25, according to Hill.

Of McKinney ZIP codes, the 75071 ZIP code had the highest number of total cases, with 1,001, from March to Oct. 16, according to Collin County data.

As of Oct. 16, 75069 has a total of 895 cases, 75070 has 680 cases and 75072 has 329 cases.

Data as of Oct. 16 shows the 20-29 age group in McKinney has had the highest number of total COVID-19 cases, but that age group is closely followed by those ages 40-49, ages 0-19 and ages 30-39, respectively. Data shows 833 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Collin County from Oct. 10-16. With 15,806 recovered cases and 168 people with COVID-19 dead as of Oct. 16, the total number of active cases in the county is 945. In total, there have been 16,751 confirmed cases in Collin County.

Among the key indicators being watched by experts is the number of hospitalizations. Collin County reported 147 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized as of Oct. 16. That number has increased over the last two weeks.

Statewide, the number of patients who have tested positive with COVID-19 and are currently hospitalized is 4,263 as of Oct. 15. That compares with 3,556 patients who were hospitalized and had COVID-19 on Oct. 8.

The rate of confirmed cases takes into account population differences. In Texas, there were 27.48 confirmed cases per 1,000 people as of Oct. 16. Here are the rates per 1,000 people for the four North Texas counties as of Oct. 16.

One important metric being watched by experts is the state’s positivity rate, which hit a record high in Texas on Aug. 11 with a rate of 24.5%. The rate is averaged over the previous seven days and calculates the ratio of new cases compared with the number of tests. Gov. Greg Abbott has previously said a rate of 10% or more is cause for concern. On Oct. 14, the rate was 8.25%. Here is a look at the rate since early April.
