Telecommunications tower planned for south McKinney

A new telecommunications tower is planned for Craig Ranch in south McKinney, according to a June 13 McKinney Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

McKinney Planning and Zoning Commission members unanimously recommend approval for a specific use permit that would allow for the construction of a 105-foot telecommunications tower near Stacy Road and Custer Road.

The stealth monopole-style tower will be inside a 110-foot monument-style structure featuring a Craig Ranch logo and surrounded by a 6-foot masonry screening wall, according to city documents.

The tower will be located on the southwest corner of a roughly 4.5-acre property, about 785 feet from the closest residential property, according to a presentation from city staff. The property is also occupied by the Storage Center at Craig Ranch, a self-storage facility located at 8770 W. Stacy Road, McKinney.

The proposed tower can house up to four wireless carriers and is planned to support service providers T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, according to a presentation by Peter Kavanagh of Zone Systems Inc., a representative of the project’s applicant. The tower may also add service provider AT&T in the future, Kavanagh said.

The project will be considered by McKinney City Council members at a July 18 meeting for final action on the specific use permit request, Planning and Zoning Commission Chair Bill Cox said. Another telecommunications tower coming to the Craig Ranch area was approved by City Council members in February.
