The Buda Planning and Zoning Commission approved a specific-use permit for a drive-thru Starbucks near the intersection of FM 967 and FM 1626 at a meeting Nov. 13.
The property is currently zoned F4 under Buda’s Unified Development Code, which allows drive-thru restaurants and cafes but requires that developer seek a specific-use permit.
The F4 designation is intended to create areas of relatively high-density, mixed-use development that is in line with the city's comprehensive plan. Assistant City Manager Chance Sparks told the commission that in this type of development, auto-centric businesses such as drive-thrus can be used to create a buffer for pedestrian activity on the inside of the district.
The Starbucks is planned for a parcel of land 423 feet south of FM 967, close to the CVS Pharmacy.
The specific-use permit must go to the City Council for approval before the project can move forward.
