Denton County vaccine waitlist opens to healthy adults in their 50s, early 60s

People in their 50s and early 60s may now sign up for Denton County’s vaccine waitlist, joining groups of older residents and younger ones with chronic medical conditions who have been receiving the shots in recent weeks.

Denton County Public Health announced the change March 10, the same day the state health department expanded the list of those eligible for COVID-19 immunizations.

“We want to make sure eligible individuals have access to receive COVID-19 vaccinations as we all work together on a path to ending this pandemic,” County Judge Andy Eads said in a statement.

Groups eligible to sign up for the vaccine now include people ages 50 and older; those ages 16 and older who have chronic medical conditions; and workers in schools, daycares or healthcare fields.

The county has been administering thousands of vaccines a day at Texas Motor Speedway, the site of its mass clinics. At the clinics, officials have been administering doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, and will soon receive doses of the shot produced by Johnson & Johnson.

The county also announced on March 9 that it would begin to vaccinate thousands of teachers on the waitlist on Friday evenings, beginning this week.
