Lewisville to spray for mosquitoes after trap tests positive for West Nile virus

Crews will spray for mosquitoes Oct. 19 and 20 after a trap in the 800 block of Tablerock Way west of I-35E in Lewisville tested positive for West Nile virus.

Ground spraying will be done within a half-mile radius of the trap starting at 9 p.m. each night by city contractor Vector Disease Control International, according to a city news release.

The insecticide poses minimal risk to people and is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, according to the release.

The city of Lewisville has nine locations tested regularly for West Nile virus. This is the second positive test of a trap with the mosquito-borne virus in the city this year. Lewisville has been contracting with Vector Disease Control International for six years, the release stated.

West Nile virus is typically transmitted through a mosquito bite. To reduce risk, residents should eliminate any standing water in their yards, wear long pants and long sleeves when outdoors, avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and use insect repellant containing DEET.
