John Jun resigns from Coppell City Council to run for state office

Coppell’s Mayor Pro Tem John Jun is stepping down from Coppell City Council to pursue a seat in the state Legislature.

He is running to be the next state representative in Texas House District 115, which requires him to vacate his seat. To fill his position, council called a special election for May 4, which drew two candidates, Freddie Guerra and Ramesh Premkumar.

Jun has represented Place 5 on council since his election in 2020. He is required by the Texas Constitution to step down from any held elected office to pursue a different office.

“I’m always looking for ways to better serve the community,” Jun said in a city news release. “Serving on the Coppell City Council was a way to do that, and now I hope I have the opportunity to serve not just Coppell, but other cities as well at the state level.”

Per the news release, Jun has volunteered with a number of local organizations, including his church, the Korean Society of Dallas and the Coppell Lions Club.

A ceremony is planned at 6:30 p.m. May 14, Jun’s last day on council, with remarks beginning at 7 p.m., according to the news release.
