Coppell Fleet Services recognized for improving air quality, reducing emissions

Coppell was one of 24 entities recognized by a U.S. Department of Energy program for its success in reducing the use of petroleum in vehicles and improving local air quality.

The city's fleet services staff were honored at the annual Fleet Recognition Awards hosted by the Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition Oct. 25. According to a city news release, the Coppell Fleet Services division, which received bronze distinction in 2023, has been recognized during the awards each year since 2019.

Two-minute impact

To be eligible for recognition, cities must maintain a policy outlining a clean fleet, a framework for efficient operations provided by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and complete the annual DFW Clean Cities survey. The survey is a tool used to record a fleet’s data as it pertains to reductions to both emissions and fuel consumption and partnerships with the Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition.

Efforts in Coppell include eliminating the use of diesel engines when possible, utilizing electric and hybrid vehicles, and reducing idling time through a city policy, Fleet Services Manager Casey McCaughan said in the news release.

“We conducted a study last year to determine which service vehicles would be good candidates for electric vehicles, and we’re gradually adding those to the fleet while decommissioning some of the older vehicles with larger engines,” McCaughan said. “We are always focused on efforts that keep our environmental impact down while still effectively serving our community.”
