An application to continue the optional flexible school day program, or OFSDP, was approved at a June 12 board meeting, paving the way for students who qualify as "at-risk" to take night courses in Lewisville ISD.

District officials said the OFSDP initiative allows LISD to consider the weighted average of daily attendance for at-risk students enrolled in the night school program. LISD will host high school night courses at the Lewisville Learning Center.

A closer look
The purpose of the program is to enable a "greater percentage of students" to graduate from high school, district officials said. Eligible students include those meeting state guidelines as being at risk of dropping out of school—including those that have already dropped out—who are attending a campus implementing an innovative design, or who are attending an approved early college high school program.
The cost
Per a district memo, Texas Education Code 29.0822 allocates funding for the OFSDP via a prorated portion of the weighted average daily attendance based on the number of minutes each eligible student partakes in the program.

"The stated mission of LISD’s program is to provide flexible school hours with additional support and interventions for at-risk eligible ninth-12th grade LISD students via an evening program at the LLC to increase successful course completion, high school graduation, and transition to post-secondary education or career of choice," the Lewisville ISD board of trustees said in an official statement.
