The vision of Mohanas Food is to make Indian cooking simplified for everyone, owner Kannamma Balasubramanian said.
The context
Balasubramanian said the idea for the Coppell-based business started with her sons.
“I have two boys and both are food lovers,” she said.
One of her sons began to miss her cooking when he went off to college.
“He even tried to learn cooking but Indian cooking is really complicated and it needs a lot of spices,” Balasubramanian said. “That’s when this thought started.”
What’s special about it
Balasubramanian began making what’s called a thokku Indian curry base, which can be used to make more than 50 dishes. With this base, Balasubramanian’s son could get a taste of his mother’s cooking in a matter of minutes no matter where he was.
“That’s how it all started and it helps him a lot,” she said. “He can replicate my cooking, my taste. He doesn’t have to do a lot of cooking or lot of prepping, and it’s so easy.”
Balasubramanian has been making her thokku Indian curry base for the past three or four years, but only recently incorporated her business. Operating as an online-only business, Mohanas Food will be sending out its first orders to residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth area near the end of the month.
