Beacon Cafe on Beach Street owners Sumi Sinkhade and her husband, Marvin Karki, have been in the restaurant industry for 12 years, with the last two spent at the cafe in Fort Worth. Before moving to Texas to be near family, they ran a similar restaurant in Iowa, which Sinkhade said competed with IHOP.
Beacon Cafe’s menu focuses on American-style comfort food with some Tex-Mex options. The cafe also features the Aviators Coffee and Espresso Bar, which Sinkhade said is a favorite with customers. In addition to coffee, the bar also serves tea, hot chocolate and fruit smoothies. Although she is not a big coffee drinker, Sinkhade said she loves the coco mint mocha.
“We eat here,” she said. “And we serve the same food to our customers.”
Before moving to the U.S. from Nepal in the 2000s, and prior to their going to work in the restaurant industry, Sinkhade and Karki worked in education. In Iowa, they worked at a gas station and a Walmart until some of their family members opened a new restaurant and brought Sinkhade and Karki on board.
