Katy ISD will host a public forum Feb. 18 for residents to give feedback on the proposed naming of the new North Transportation Center after former transportation director William “Bill” Kyser, who served from 1985-2007.
The forum will be held at 5 p.m. at the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, located at 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy.
The big picture
The North Transportation Center, located at 25030 Longenbaugh Road in Katy, started operating in January and is reported to assist beyond 95,000 students on a regular basis, officials said.
The backstory
During the Feb. 16 Katy ISD board work study meeting, Kyser’s tenure was described by his nominator as "innovative" thanks to his fortitude in installing air conditioning on school buses and offering in-house day care for bus drivers, Communications Manager Dolores Hernandez said.
The nominator said Kyser also went out of his way to instill safety education for students and teach elementary schoolers how to ride the bus.
“William ‘Bill’ Kyser leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and public service,” Hernandez read.
Kyser, who died in 2025, is survived by his wife, Mary, who is a former educator at KISD; his children, Kristen Azari and Kevin Kyser; and five grandchildren.
How we got here
The center, KISD’s fourth, became necessary to support several schools as the district’s northwest region persists in growth, including:

- Cross Elementary
- Youngblood Elementary
- Faldyn Elementary
- McElwain Elementary
- Nelson Junior High
- Haskett Junior High
- Stockdick Junior High
- Paetow High
- Freeman High
The center provides administrative offices, vehicle maintenance bays, a fueling station, a mechanic shop, parking for an estimated 240 buses, a child care building and a maintenance warehouse, according to the district’s website.

The board will make their official decision on naming the North Transportation Center at its Feb. 23 board meeting.
