Katy ISD students outscored state averages in every subject in the 2026 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness exams administered this spring to grades third through eighth and STAAR end-of-course assessments administered to high schoolers.
Some context
The Texas Education Agency released statewide and district-specific test scores for the STAAR math, reading and social studies exams June 16, and the STAAR EOC Algebra I, English I, English II, biology and U.S. History exams June 10. STAAR science scores will be released July 31.
The TEA uses a four-tiered grading system for student performance to score STAAR test performance in each subject:
- Did not meet grade level
- Approaches grade level
- Meets grade level
- Masters grade level
"Approaches grade level" is considered a passing score, with the TEA determining students with this score are likely to succeed in the next grade or course, but could need targeted academic intervention.

Data shows Katy ISD students performed above the state average in 18 subjects. Meanwhile, district students saw equal or improved performance year-over-year in all exams except:
- Third grade math
- Fourth grade math
- Seventh grade math
- Third grade reading
- Fourth grade reading
- Sixth grade reading
- Eighth grade social studies
- English II
- U.S. History
What they’re saying
In a statement, Katy ISD officials said they are proud of the progress students and educators continue to make across the district, though they see this as a stepping stone to more success in the future.
"We are encouraged by our students’ performance on the 2026 STAAR assessments, which reflect continued academic growth and the dedication of our students, teachers, staff and families,” officials said. “While we celebrate this progress, we know there is always more work to do.”
