The city of Tomball is proposing a $40.49 million general fund budget for fiscal year 2024-25, projecting $37.7 million in revenues and $40.49 million in expenditures, according to the city’s budget presentation.

The breakdown

Tomball City Council held its first budget workshop for FY 2024-25 on July 15.

During the workshop, city staff presented the proposed general fund budget and briefly touched on projected sales tax revenue.

The proposed general fund budget is anticipated to end in a $2.69 million shortfall, according to the city’s presentation. Tomball will use its fund balance—essentially the city’s savings account—to cover the shortfall. The fund balance is projected to sit at $26.7 million by the end of FY 2024-25.

Diving deeper

Proposed items within the FY 24-25 general fund budget include:
  • $87,500 for a traffic preemption system for emergency vehicles
  • $62,000 for outdoor speakers for The Depot
  • $52,000 for an entry way monuments consultant
  • $40,000 for a replacement Christmas tree for The Depot

Additionally, Tomball is proposing budgeting $16.5 million in sales tax revenue for FY 24-25.

Quote of note

City Manager David Esquivel said some of the shortfall can be attributed to the city’s purchase of land for a possible city hall site.

“That was a $2 million increase that was not budgeted. And so that was added to the projections,” Esquivel said.
