Staff in Tomball ISD could receive pay raises should the school board approve a 4% pay increase at its June 13 regular meeting.

The big picture

The TISD school board will consider approving a pay increase of 4% of the midpoint value in the district pay schedules, according to the agenda.

The district is also adjusting the midpoint values for the 2023-24 year, which means the raises will be applied to the new adjusted values, Superintendent Martha Salazar-Zamora said during the board’s June 12 workshop meeting.

“We want to make sure everyone understood that,” Salazar-Zamora said. “When we say 4%, it is actually far more than that this year, which we are very pleased with considering all the challenges that we’re facing financially.”

Zooming out

The raises come as the board also gets ready to adopt the fiscal year 2023-24 budget, which projects $203 million in revenues and $208 million in expenses, resulting in a $5 million shortfall.

In the proposed FY 2023-24 budget, the district plans to increase security spending by 55% and curriculum/staff development spending by 13.02%, Community Impact previously reported.

What else?

  • Chief Financial Officer Jim Ross said all teachers should see a pay raise of at least $3,500.
  • The new starting salary for a first-year teacher will be $60,500, Salazar-Zamora said.

What they’re saying

  • “This is a 3% increase in the scales plus 4%,” Ross said. “It’s the biggest raise we’ve ever given.”
  • “Our confidence is huge,” board President Lee McLeod said. “We are so grateful for all of you. It is really about all of you and what you do for the kids in this community. Our kids are better because you’re here. You are deserving. I haven’t voted yet, but you can see my hand up high and proud and loud [today] when we vote for that raise.”
  • “There has been a touchpoint for every single staff member, salaried or hourly,” Salazar-Zamora said. “It’s an exciting time.”

What’s next

The TISD school board will consider approving both the pay raise and the FY 2023-24 budget at its June 13 meeting set to take place at 5:30 p.m. at the John P. Neubaur Administration Building, 310 S. Cherry St., Tomball.
