The Tomball Police Department hosts a National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 6-8 p.m. at the Tomball Historic Depot Plaza, located at 201 S. Elm St. The free event is hosted by first responders from the Tomball Fire Department, Tomball Police Department, Northwest Emergency Medical Services and Tomball Public Works to promote crime prevention awareness, according to a statement from the city.

Police cars, fire trucks, sky watch towers and the police department’s GYRO plane “Michael One” are some of the many exhibits that will be on display for the community during the event. The event also features food provided by H-E-B as well as a number of activities and games, such as a bounce house, face painting, performances from local groups, kids games and a visit from Tex, the longhorn steer.

According to the National Association of Town Watch which sponsors National Night Out, the event is an effort to bring law enforcement and local communities together to promote safer neighborhoods and and police-community partnerships. Neighborhoods across all 50 states as well as U.S. territories and military bases participate in the event every year.

Tomball Memorial High School Resource Officer Jennifer Davis said the National Night Out event seeks to bring the community together and provide a place where citizens can meet with officers.

“We want to encourage [community members] to express their concerns with officers that are there,  whether it be crime-prevention related or personal,” Davis said. “We want to give them a place that is a positive atmosphere, where they can visit with officers, ask their questions and get to know the officers that work in their community.”

Magnolia Police Department officials said the city of Magnolia will not participate in National Night Out this year as a result of limited staff.
