Conroe ISD is projected to see enrollment grow to 73,000 students by the 2030-31 school year, according to a new Zonda Demographics study presented to the board of trustees at its March 17 meeting.
A previous 2022 study performed by Population and Survey Analysts projected higher numbers, with nearly 100,000 students expected by 2032-33.
What to know
Conroe ISD enrollment increased by 5,072 students overall in the last four school years, with 150 fewer students entering in the 2025-26 school year, according to Zonda.
The demographers compared the number of students entering the district and those leaving the district for the previous five years, Zonda officials said.
“We used district birthdate data, from the state health department ... we look at the ZIP codes that predominantly make up the district and look at the kindergarten enrollment as a capture rate,” said Rocky Gardiner, Zonda’s director of school district consulting.
Digging deeper
Zonda officials said within the next 10 years, the district will grow to almost 73,000 students by 2030-31 before an anticipated decline by 2035-36 to around 71,500 students. This contrasts with a previous PASA report that showed nearly steady growth expected from 2023-33.
Officials said by comparing student ID numbers year-to-year, they were able to show that the number of students leaving the school district from kindergarten to 11th grade increased from 6,653 students leaving in the 2024-25 school year to 7,260 students for the 2025-26 school year.
According to the data, the largest class of the current school year is 10th grade, with 5,584 students, and ninth grade has the second-most students, with 5,774 enrolled.
By the 2027-28 school year, the following schools will have the highest enrollment:

- Derechin Elementary School
- Patterson Elementary School
- Cox Intermediate School
- McCullough Junior High School
- York Junior High School
- Conroe High School
- Grand Oaks High School
- College Park High School

The mascots for Kacy Arnold Elementary School, which will open in August at 5175 Woodson's Spring Drive in Spring, and Lynn Cartwright Junior High School, opening in August 2027 at FM 1314 north of Crighton Road in Conroe, were also approved by the board. The elementary mascot will be an owl, and the junior high's mascot will be a cougar.
