Oak Ridge North City Council member Michelle Cassio is expected to resign from the council this week.

Mayor Jim Kuykendall confirmed this morning Cassio has stepped down from the council to focus on her business, Cassio Creations.

"Michelle has stepped down from being a council person, and we are hopefully going to appoint someone Thursday night," Kuykendall said. "We love Michelle and she's still going to stay active in the city, but she's got a lot going on. They've got Cassio Creations and they've moved to a new location in Hughes Landing. The business is phenomenal and life is good. She's not stepping down for any other reason except for things are good."

Cassio previously said she has lived in the city for more than 10 years. She was first elected to the council in 2016 and was sworn in for a second term earlier this year.

Tonight's meeting of Oak Ridge North City Council was cancelled, however the resignation is expected to be discussed and accepted at the rescheduled meeting Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. At that time, a new appointee will be sworn in, according to city documents. That appointee will serve the rest of Cassio's term, set to expire in May 2019.

Cassio could not immediately be reached for comment.
