Sugar Land saw a 7.32% decrease in population between 2019 and 2024, while Missouri City saw a 2.68% increase, according to five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

The 2024 results, which were released Jan. 29, show a drop of 8,693 residents between the 2024 and 2019 five-year estimates in Sugar Land. Meanwhile, Missouri City grew by 2,001 residents.
The details
The data shows both cities became more diverse over the last five years, with the percentage of white residents shrinking by 12.47 percentage points in Sugar Land and 11.21 percentage points in Missouri City from 2019 data.
The data shows the same demographic remaining the most populous in both cities, with Sugar Land’s 39.58% white population slightly ahead of its 38.68% Asian population.
Meanwhile, Missouri City’s 38.67% Black population stayed atop the chart despite a 3.24 percentage point decrease from 2019, while the white population remains second.
Additionally, the population of those identifying by two or more races grew the most in both cities—up 8.75 percentage points in Sugar Land and 10.91 percentage points in Missouri City from 2019, the data showed.
Digging deeper
Meanwhile, the data showed both cities saw their median age increase with Sugar Land’s increasing by 0.6 years to 42.8 years and the most populous age group—between 45 and 54 years—sitting at 14.5% of the population.
Missouri City’s median age has also increased by 0.9 years to 40.5 years, with the most populous age group sitting in the 25-34 age group, at 13.8%, the data shows.
