Bond-funded renovations and construction on Friendswood ISD schools are still slated to finish on time as construction begins, the district said.

PBK Architects presented updates on the projects it designed at the July 18 Friendswood ISD board of directors meeting. Dry weather has benefitted construction efforts, PBK representative Greg Prince noted, and the construction on all projects is scheduled to be complete on time despite supply chain hurdles.

The project is part of the $128 million school bond approved by voters in November 2020. Most recently, the board approved PBK’s designs for renovations and construction on Windsong Intermediate, Bales Intermediate and Westwood Elementary schools.

Prince identified supply chain issues as the biggest risk to on-time completion of these projects. High temperatures and the shutdown of a concrete plant have hindered efforts to source concrete. However, the progress on construction has not suffered.

"These are not hurdles we haven’t faced in the past," Prince said.

Construction on Friendswood High School, which was budgeted for $51.6 million, involves both interior and exterior renovations.

FHS's new practice fields are scheduled to be completed by July 29. The gym addition and tennis facility are scheduled to be completed by May 30, 2023, currently ahead of the original June 30, 2023 estimate. The performing arts center is scheduled to be completed by June 20, 2023, slightly ahead of the contracted June 30, 2023 completion.

Interior renovations to FHS are scheduled to be complete by Dec. 1, 2023, ahead of the contracted date of Dec. 15, 2023. Renovations will begin in June 2023.

Construction of a new Cline Elementary School, budgeted for $37 million, has substantial completion scheduled for June 8, 2023. Grading is underway at the site.

The district submitted a specific-use permit July 1 for construction on Windsong Intermediate, and a permit and zoning hearing will be held Aug. 11.
