Galilee Greens to sell organic vegetables soon in Porter

Galilee Greens—an aquaponics store—is expected to open soon in Porter, owner Luci Hissey said Nov. 19.

How it works

Aquaponics is the practice of growing crops with tanks of water, as previously reported by Community Impact. Farmers using this practice typically raise a community of small fish in tanks, and the waste produced is used as fertilizer to support the crops.

What to expect

Galilee Greens will begin selling organic vegetables soon, Hissey said. According to the company's website, the store will also eventually offer:

• Fish
• Organic fish fertilizers
• Monthly subscriptions
• Tours and educational programs

Hissey said she has been a farmer for many years, but this is her first aquaponics store.
