The big picture
As previously reported by Community Impact, work began in April 2023 on the Northpark Drive overpass project, which will widen Northpark Drive into a six-lane divided roadway between Hwy. 59 and Russell Palmer Road. The $76.8 million project will also add an overpass over the Union Pacific Railroad train tracks and Loop 494, and is expected to wrap up in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Directly adjacent, the Northpark Drive reconstruction project—a $72.7 million project—will reconstruct Northpark Drive to a six-lane divided roadway between Russell Palmer Road and Woodland Hills Drive, per prior reporting. The project will also include a pedestrian underpass near Glade Valley Drive, and construction is expected to begin in October 2028 and wrap up in 2030.
Both projects are funded by the city of Houston and the Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority/Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 10.
The latest
According to information on the LHRA website, two traffic changes for the project began Oct. 8. During both traffic shifts, the contractor will be installing additional stormwater drainage infrastructure and reconstructing the existing roadways.
Contractor Harper Brothers Construction implemented a traffic shift between Hwy. 59 and Loop 494 so that eastbound traffic will be redirected onto the newly constructed westbound lanes, while westbound traffic will continue to use the existing westbound pavement.
Per the website, this traffic shift is expected to remain in place for approximately three months.
What else?
Traffic shifts were also implemented at the Kings Mill Park Drive intersection, with construction divided into two phases to maintain two-way access, per the website.
During Phase 1, the east drive closed for three weeks of construction with traffic being routed through the west drive. For Phase 2, the west drive will be closed for construction for three months, and all traffic will be routed through the east drive.
During these phases, left turns from Kings Mill Park Drive onto the westbound Northpark Drive will not be permitted, per the website.
