Updated noon May 8

New Caney ISD has once again rescheduled its graduation ceremonies, this time to an earlier date in June.

New Caney ISD officials recently announced that graduation ceremonies for its three high schools will be rescheduled from July 18 at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center to June 4-6 at Randall Reed Stadium, according to a notice on the district's website.

Infinity Early College High School's graduation will be at 8 p.m. June 4, Porter High School's ceremony will be at 8 p.m. June 5 and New Caney High School's graduation will be at 8 p.m. June 6.

The decision to reschedule graduation came after the Texas Education Agency announced May 5 that in-person graduations could take place for some rural counties as early as May 15. Outdoor in-person ceremonies can take place in any county on or after June 1.

To continue practicing social distancing, each graduate will only be able to invite four family members to attend, according to the NCISD website. Graduations will also be streamed to allow other friends and family to view the ceremony.

New Caney ISD officials announced April 23 a plan to postpone graduation ceremonies for the district's seniors.

Graduations for New Caney, Porter and Infinity Early College high schools will be rescheduled to July 18 at the M.O. Campbell Educational Center at 1865 Aldine Bender, Houston. New Caney ISD's graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 were previously scheduled for May 23.

Public Relations Executive Director Scott Powers said the ceremony times will remain the same: Porter High School at 9 a.m., Infinity Early College High School at noon and New Caney High School at 2 p.m.

Prior to the April 23 announcement, NCISD officials also discussed potential plans for virtual graduation ceremonies. At the April 20 NCISD board of trustees meeting, Superintendent Kenn Franklin said he was waiting on guidance from Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath on how graduations will be conducted across the state.

Scott Castleberry, executive director of student and staff services at NCISD, said at the April 20 meeting that graduation invitations, caps and gowns are currently set to be mailed to seniors.

Community Impact Newspaper has reached out to the district with further questions on the decision, and this story will be updated with the responses when they become available.
