“I hope that we'll continue to be an inspiration of what it means to be a resilient community and certainly a community committed to our faith,” said Timothy Sloan, senior pastor of The Luke Church, at the meeting.
Sloan said The Luke Church currently has more than 8,000 members.
The history
The church was originally founded in 1900 as the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend R. F. Skinner serving as the first pastor, according to the church’s website. Around 1930, the church's Black members were forced to leave the original location within Humble’s city limits and relocate to Bordersville, a historic Black community on the outskirts of town.
In 2006, The Luke Church on South Houston Avenue in Humble purchased 21.7 acres of land, according to its website. By 2011, the church had expanded into a bigger facility.
