Roadwork has commenced to alleviate traffic concerns near Huggins Elementary School.

Zooming in

Fort Bend County and Fulshear officials broke ground April 21 on the $6.5 million Huggins Drive project, which will widen the road by adding a center lane and extend it to FM 359 from its end at Houston Street/Dixon Road.

Additionally the project will add a sidewalk between FM 359 and Fulshear Katy Road, and realign Houston Street and Dixon Road where they intersect with Huggins Drive, county officials previously said.

“This long awaited project not only represents progress, but it also reflects the power of partnership and planning,” Fulshear Mayor Don McCoy said at the groundbreaking.

The cost

The project is jointly funded by the city of Fulshear and the county’s November 2013 voter-approved mobility bond, which outlined $184.9 million for 62 county projects, county officials said.

What they’re saying

Residents and area neighborhoods face challenges around Huggins Elementary School as cars pile up during after school pick-up, McCoy said.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Vincent Morales said he and his wife experienced the road’s traffic when taking his almost 41-year-old son to elementary school years ago.

Although both city and county officials faced delays in obtaining right of ways, property acquisition and utilities, Morales said he is grateful to see the project moving forward.

“Sometimes it just takes being persistent to just move forward,” he said. “This is going to be a great improvement for the city of Fulshear and for the county as well. I want to thank all our teams ... who made this possible.”

Going forward

The construction notice to proceed was issued April 14, and the project is expected to wrap up in the first quarter of 2026, City Manager Zach Goodlander said.
