The big picture
This summer the Fort Bend County Clerk’s Office is hosting Buddy’s Buddies, its annual animal supply drive benefitting Fort Bend County Animal Services.
Community members are invited to drop off donations from June 20 to July 31 at any Fort Bend County Clerk’s Office location.
“The Fort Bend [County] community is made up of not just the people that inhabit it, but also the animals,” Manager of Operations Montreal Peterson said in an email. “The County Clerk has been passionate about supporting our local shelter as it has dealt with being at max capacity, fundraising for fans for the summer and heating for the winter, and providing supplies during some of the hardest and hottest months of the year.”
The details
Highlighted needs for the Fort Bend County Animal Services include:
- Wet food, dry food and treats
- Toys, cat towers and beds
- Harnesses and leashes
- Blankets, towels and linens
- Crates and litter
- Paper towels, hand sanitizer, bleach and other cleaning supplies
- Gift certificates/cards to pet supply stores
Additionally, those who are unable to drop off supplies can purchase from Fort Bend County Animal Services’ Amazon wish list, which sends items directly to the shelter.
The background
The annual donation drive began in 2021 fueled by County Clerk Laura Richard’s love for pets, Peterson said. The supply drive, called “Buddy’s Buddies,” is named after Richard's adopted dog Buddy, who was rescued from the shelter at 2 years old.
“He started out as a skinny Shepherd mix, but has bloomed into a well-fed member of the Richard family,” Peterson said. “Buddy’s sweet nature ... embodies the County Clerk’s mission to support and encourage others to take home their own ‘Buddy’ from the local shelter.”
What else?
The Fort Bend County Libraries’ Missouri City Branch is also hosting a donation drive for its free Community Pet-Supply Swap on July 14 in the library’s meeting room at 1530 Texas Parkway, Missouri City.
The library is collecting new or gently used pet supplies from July 1-23, according to a June 14 news release. Those who donate will receive a ticket for one hour early access to the July 24 event. The event will then be open to the general public from 3-4 p.m.
Any items not claimed during the event will be donated to the Missouri City Animal Shelter.
