Katy ISD board of trustees approved an amendment to add a fall break to future instructional calendars, including an amendment to the 2026-27 calendar, at its Jan. 20 meeting.

The board also approved the 2027-28 instructional calendar, which sets Aug. 11, 2027, as the first day of school and includes a fall break in October.

What’s new

The addition of a fall break stems from community feedback that showed strong support for the change, according to district documents.

Key dates for the 2026-27 calendar include:
  • First day of school: Aug. 12
  • Fall break: Oct. 9-13
  • Staff and student holiday: Feb. 15, 2027
  • Spring break: March 8-12, 2027
  • Last day of school: May 26, 2027
The amendment also removes the early graduation option for seniors.

The details

District staff administered a 2027-28 instructional calendar survey from Dec. 16 through Jan. 6, collecting more than 20,000 responses from parents, students and staff, Chief Communications Officer Andrea Grooms said.

Based on the feedback received, Draft C was selected as the preferred calendar option.

According to district documents, scheduled breaks for KISD in 2027-28 include the following dates:
  • Fall break: Oct. 8-12, 2027
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 22-26, 2027
  • Winter break: Dec. 20-31, 2027
  • Spring break: March 13-17, 2028
Student holidays include the following dates:
  • Labor Day: Sept. 6, 2027
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Jan. 17, 2028
  • Easter: April 14-17, 2028
  • Memorial Day: May 29, 2028
  • Early release: Dec. 17, 2027, May 24, 2028
The results

Calendar Option C received 56% of the vote and added holidays Feb. 21, 2028, for Presidents Day and April 17, 2028, the day after Easter, in addition to the extended fall break.

Through open-ended feedback, survey respondents expressed a desire to align with neighboring districts, keep fall and spring semester lengths equal and account for working parents, Grooms said.
