Construction on Hempstead Road between Washington Avenue and 12th Street in Houston is expected to end in December, according to officials with the Texas Department of Transportation, which is carrying out the project.

The project involves widening the four-lane roadway to six lanes as well as rebuilding three railroad underpasses. Work kicked off in 2018 and was previously estimated to be completed in February of this year.

The project will also improve sidewalks, curb ramps, storm sewers and culverts, pavement markings and add new traffic signals at 11th and 12th street, according to the Texas Department of Transportation's website.

The portion of the road connecting Washington to Hempstead is expected to remain closed until the project is completed, TxDOT officials said.
