The decision comes as Acting Executive Director Cassie Clarke steps down for a new role and as other organizations that offer similar programming begin to resume in-person options. Writespace, which was founded in 2016, has been offering virtual workshops since May 2020, which has had limited success, according to a statement. It previously operated from its Arts District space, 2000A Edwards St., Houston.
"We do not have enough of a following to reopen a physical space, and we cannot succeed financially by only offering courses online," the nonprofit's board of directors wrote in an email to stakeholders.
The board is asking for input as it evaluates next steps.
"If Writespace is to have a future it will require dynamic, passionate leadership committed to this mission," the board wrote in a statement. "We also know that Writespace will need tangible support if we find a way to move forward."
A plan for moving forward was hoped to be in place by the summer, according to the announcement.
