Houston ISD board managers approved the district’s academic calendar for the 2026-27 school year, which will begin Aug. 10 and end May 28, 2027.

Board managers approved the 2026-27 academic calendar at their Feb. 12 meeting. The new calendar will remain consistent with the district's 2025-26 calendar with 181 total days.
Officials noted the calendar was created using feedback from HISD's District Advisory Committee, Teacher Advisory Council, district teachers and staff, campus leaders and community members.
A closer look
According to the calendar, HISD students will have two week-long breaks and one two-week break throughout the year, including:
- Nov. 23-27
- Dec. 21-Jan. 1, 2027
- March 8-12, 2027
Additionally, no classes will be held for students on the following dates:
- Sept. 7: Labor Day
- Sept. 21: staff development day
- Oct. 9: staff development day
- Jan. 4, 2027: staff development day
- Jan. 18, 2027: Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Feb. 15, 2027: staff development day
- March 26, 2027: staff development day
- March 29, 2027: Chavez-Huerta Day
- April 16, 2027: staff development day
- May 25, 2027: Memorial Day
According to the calendar, summer classes will be held from June 8-July 15, with the exception of holidays on June 18, July 2 and July 5.
In other news
Board managers also voted against adopting an optional school prayer policy as granted by Senate Bill 11, which allows Texas public school districts to set aside time for students and staff to pray or read religious texts during the school day.
Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill into law June 21, giving all school districts a March 1 deadline to decide if they will be implementing the policy. Districts are not required to approve the prayer periods, Community Impact previously reported.
