The Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon will be virtual competitions in 2021, organizers for the Houston Marathon Committee announced Oct. 5, citing health concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At this time, we recognize that there are many unknowns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, but the safety and well-being of our runners, volunteers, partners and spectators will always be our top priority,” said Wade Morehead, executive director of the Houston Marathon Committee, in the announcement. “While we are unable to celebrate the 2021 event together in the heart of Downtown Houston, we will be cheering for our runners around the world as they participate in a unique virtual race experience, embracing the incredible spirit of our RunHOU community.”

Participants will be able to complete their race anytime between Jan. 8-17, 2021, and submit timing information through an online account. Those who had already registered for 2021 can opt to participate along with a discount for the 2022 race—the 50th anniversary—or defer entry to 2022 or 2023, or donate their entry fee to the Houston Marathon Committee.

City leaders supported the decision.

“The decision to cancel the 2021 Chevron Houston Marathon is incredibly disappointing for everyone, but it is the right course to follow because of the pandemic,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said.
