Houston’s Fourth of July celebrations will include fireworks but no in-person concerts, officials announced June 1.

“The goal is to have things back open in the fall for parades and things like that,” Turner said. “For now it's a modified format.”

Country artists Jimmy Allen and Lee Brice will perform virtual concerts on July 4 for the city’s annual Shell Freedom over Texas celebration. Onlookers will be able to view fireworks from Eleanor Tinsley Park and Buffalo Bayou.

The announcement marks the second year in a row that the city’s Fourth of July celebrations have been modified due to COVID-19 restrictions. Turner cited low vaccination rates and risk of spread among concertgoers as the reasons for the modifications.

The latest data shows 34% of Harris County residents are fully vaccinated, according to Harris County Public Health.
