Summer Olympics viewers will see several Cy-Fair ISD alumni in the 2020 event, which is taking place in Tokyo and was postponed a year due to COVID-19. While some events start as early as July 21, the opening ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC July 23 at 6 a.m. local time.

District officials highlighted the following athletes in a news release:

  1. Former Cypress Springs High School softball player Cat Osterman will be returning for her third experience representing the United States after winning a gold and silver medal respectively in 2004 and 2008.

  2. Scott Kazmir, a former pitcher for Cypress Falls High School, was named to Team USA’s roster earlier this month. In his Major League Baseball career, he has won 108 games over 13 seasons, officials said.

  3. First-time Olympian Lawson Craddock is a Cypress Springs graduate and will be competing as part of the USA Cycling Olympic Road Team. He recently won the 2021 USA Cycling Pro Road National Championship Individual Time Trial.

  4. Munzer Kabbara graduated from Cypress Woods High School this year and will be swimming for the Lebanon Olympic team, officials said. The 18-year-old won a state title in the University Interscholastic League’s Swimming and Diving Class 6A state meet in February.

  5. Fellow Cypress Woods graduate Erica Ogwumike was named to the Nigerian women’s basketball team July 19. During her time in Cy-Fair, she won a high school state championship before leading Rice University’s women’s basketball team and being selected in the 2020 WNBA draft.
