HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress officials announced the health care center earned the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award from health care provider database Healthgrades, according to a March 26 news release.

“Through our 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Awards, we seek to recognize hospitals that excel in providing top-quality care for their patients while preventing serious injuries during hospital stays,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades.

The impact

To determine the award winners, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for 4,500 hospitals nationwide. According to the release, the results demonstrated declines in patient safety among the nation’s lowest-performing hospitals.

However, the Patient Safety Healthcare Award places HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress among the top 5% short-term acute care hospitals when it comes to patient safety.

Why it matters

According to the release, patients who seek care at hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a lower risk of experiencing serious injuries.

The four leading patient safety indicators according to the release include:
  • In-hospital falls resulting in fracture
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital
“We are honored to be recognized by Healthgrades as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient. Ensuring the health and safety of our patients, while maintaining a positive overall patient experience, is always a priority at HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress. This award solidifies our ongoing commitment,” HCA North Cypress CEO Jim Brown said in the release.
