A total of 2,203 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Harris County the week of May 31-June 6, coming close to totals confirmed in early April when cases previously spiked, according to data from the Harris County Public Health Department.

The trend in new cases comes as officials with the Texas Medical Center said they are seeing a significant increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The 2,203 cases confirmed between May 31-June 6 were up from the 1,450 cases confirmed the week of May 24-30 and are more than double the number of weekly cases that were being confirmed around late April and early May, following the issuance of stay-at-home orders across the Greater Houston area. Infectious disease experts have warned that it could take weeks for changes in policy, such as the relaxing of those orders, to be reflected in the data.

Harris County, with a population of more than 4.7 million, now has a total of 14,586 cases of COVID-19. A total of 8,714 of those cases are considered active as of June 7, and 5,611 cases are confirmed to have recovered.

Total deaths in the county now stand at 261 after eight deaths were confirmed over the June 6-7 weekend.
