Base Power officials announced in a Feb. 19 news release the expansion of its electricity services to Houston-area residents following its launch in Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth.

Established in 2023, Base Power provides a source of electricity that can keep Texans powered when power lines go down or the electric grid fails.

“Houston represents one of the largest home backup markets in the world—largely due to dramatic weather events that strain the power grid,” CEO and co-founder Zach Dell said. “We’re eager to provide an accessible energy service that delivers affordable, reliable power to Houston homeowners.”

What you need to know

Initially, the company will serve customers in the Cy-Fair, Spring, Cinco Ranch and Mission Bend communities, with plans to expand to the entire Houston area over the coming months, according to the release.

“We've accelerated our expansion into Houston due to its increased demand,” Dell said. “...We've really focused our resources as a company, built out the team [and] brought on more resources so that we can move faster to open up the Houston area and meet all that demand.”

Interested customers can join the online waitlist to be notified when the service is available in their area.

Base members can access a backup battery for $16 per month as part of their electricity plan after an initial cost of $495 for installation and permitting fees, according to the release. Base is waiving the $495 setup fee for its first 500 homeowners in the Houston region.

Dell said Houston residents can expect a reliable service that only takes a few weeks to install as opposed to companies who work with third parties and have longer installation processes.

“People can expect really rapid and transparent communication from our team, very fair and transparent pricing, and lots of resources online to learn more about the product and how our business works,” Dell said.

Alongside Base’s launch in the Houston area, the company is now accepting orders for a new plug-in that transforms a portable generator into a whole-home power source to provide extended backup for multi-day outages. The plug-in will be available for a fixed additional cost.

Also of note

Since the company’s launch in August, Base Power has served thousands of homeowners in CenterPoint Energy’s territory and is the first electricity provider to include a backup battery in its energy plan, officials said. Dell said they hope to soon serve millions of customers.

“We're really motivated to help Texans keep their lights on and keep their bills low, which, as you know, and I know in Texas, the last decade has been a challenge for people,” Dell said. “We want to bring a technology-focused home energy solution to people that's reliable, transparent, easy to work with and provides people with affordable, reliable backup.”
