Amid flash flooding in Montgomery County and parts of Harris County, school districts across the north Houston area have canceled after-school activities and announced closures for May 3.

Several shelters have opened in Montgomery County, with cities such as Conroe and Shenandoah closing their offices at noon May 2.

Montgomery County officials are recommending residents downstream of the west fork of the San Jacinto River begin evacuating to higher ground as releases from the Lake Conroe Dam reach 71,835 cubic feet per second. According to the Harris County Flood Control District, the last record for a dam release was set in 2017 following Hurricane Harvey, during which dam water release peaked at 79,100 cfs and lake levels reached 206.2 feet.
