Willis ISD held a socially distanced graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 of Willis High School on June 13 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

The ceremony was split in half with a 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. event. Guests had their temperature checked before entering, and graduates were seated socially distanced.

WHS Principal Stephanie Hodges and WISD Superintendent Tim Harkrider handed the graduates their diplomas during the event. Members of the WISD board of trustees were also present, including President Cliff Williams and Vice President Rebecca Broussard.

Senior class president Gracie Doris reflected on the strangeness of her senior year and the ceremony in a prerecorded speech.

"We should have been seated close to our fellow graduates, and these speeches should have been given live on stage," Doris said. "Though this ceremony is not what we envisioned and we may not know what the future brings, our worries cannot distort the extraordinary memories we have made."
