The Birthplace of the Lone Star Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12223 held its grand opening for the post July 1, bringing a VFW post to the west side of Montgomery County.
Third-year Trustee Ruben Borjas Jr. said the purpose of this new post is to be involved in the community, including with Montgomery ISD and Willis ISD schools through the Patriotism Program—which teaches ideals and principles of the nation's history. The commander of the post is Micheal John-Foy Day.
A member of both the VFW and the Montgomery Historical Society, Borjas said he aims to combine events between the two organizations in the future.
“VFW Post 12223 is not going to be your dad or grandpa's VFW. No smoking or drinking here,” Borjas said.
Borjas said the VFW post will be working with Montgomery and Willis to recognize both police and firefighters as well as honoring Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts through sponsoring troops. In addition, Borjas said the post will fundraise in the community and will be cooking and selling barbecue, hot dogs and hamburgers to raise funds to provide for its programs to service the community.
“Our aim is family friendly and giving back to the Montgomery-Willis communities,” Borjas said. “Our VFW will have a strong commitment to Montgomery and Willis' elderly, and aging and homeless veteran populations.”
