In a contentious Friendswood election that saw significant turnout, voters backed familiar faces to lead the city government on Saturday, sending former astronaut and Council Member Mike Foreman to the mayor's office, former Friendswood ISD superintendent Trish Hanks to a city council seat, and re-electing Council Member Steve Rockey.

Robert Griffon won the special election to fill Foreman's unexpired term on the council.

"I'm obviously excited and relieved," Foreman said. "It was a long, hard-fought race. Our opponents worked really hard, and that made us work all the harder."

In the mayoral race, turnout was 10 percent higher than in 2012, when Kevin Holland was first elected.

Foreman said he reached out to his opponent, Omar Peck, to thank him for the effort.

"I told him that his hard work and effort really made us all better and work harder," Foreman said.

The final election results are not official until they are canvassed at the May 14 city council meeting.
