PREVIEW: College Station City Council to weigh interstate support, Midtown baseball incentives

April 23’s action comes as regional transportation planning continues to focus largely on smaller-scale projects. The Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization recently opened public comment on its draft 2027-2030 Transportation Improvement Program, which lists the Bush/Wellborn interchange as the area’s only major highway construction project during that period, alongside pedestrian, bicycle and transit upgrades—including the East 29th Street shared-use path. The topic was also discussed at a recent Bryan City Council meeting.

Items worth mentioning

Ahead of the public meeting, College Station City Council will meet in closed session to discuss a couple of key matters in the ongoing development efforts of the Midtown area.

• Real estate: The council will discuss 28 acres of land at Midtown Drive and Corporate Parkway.
• Economic incentives: Council members will also discuss a potential economic development incentive agreement tied to the construction of a baseball complex in Midtown.
  • This is a project city officials have previously identified as a catalyst for tourism, youth sports and commercial growth. The city entered a letter of intent in February.

In regular session, the council will hold public hearings on:

• Rezoning: a proposed 222-acre rezoning along Greens Prairie Road from Rural to Restricted Suburban
  • “The intent of the rezoning is to build a residential subdivision consisting of approximately 886 lots,” the agenda states.
  • City Council previously denied a request in November to rezone this land as general suburban.
• Shared housing: ordinance changes to update city regulations on shared housing
  • Agenda materials mention Senate Bill 1567, which was passed during Texas’ 89th Legislature and keeps Texas cities from regulating how many people may live in a home based on relation. College Station is currently enrolled in a “no more than four” ordinance.
