As one of several vigils being held in memory of George Floyd across the Houston area in recent days, First Christian Church is offering community members a local opportunity to show support as Floyd is laid to rest this week.

The vigil begins at 7:30 p.m. June 9 outside the church at 1601 Sunset Blvd., Houston. The event will also be streamed on the congregation's Facebook page.

Attendees are encouraged to bring yard signs of support to place on the lawn. The church also asks attendees to wear masks and follow social distancing recommendations.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 7:30 p.m. June 8 at the football field at Jack Yates High School, which Floyd attended.

The events coincide with the public viewing and burial of Floyd this week. Floyd, 46, was killed in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25.
