The details
According to a Nov. 25 news release, the new project included installing solar panels on all three sections of the City Hall building's roofs, which is expected to generate enough electricity to offset up to 40% of the building's energy consumption.
The solar panels are designed to withstand hurricane-speed winds and features online performance monitoring that provides real-time data updates every five minutes, according the release.
The $65,000 project was completed by Sunshine Renewable Solutions and is anticipated to have a lifespan of 30 years. City spokesperson Cheryl Bright said the project was partially funded through the city of Bellaire Capital Improvement Program and partially funded through various grants.
“We’re thrilled to take this significant step toward a greener future for Bellaire,” Bellaire Mayor Gus Pappas said in the news release.
Some context
The project is a part of the efforts made by the city's Environmental Sustainability Board, which has been working to enhance the city's green initiatives and reduce the city's electricity costs, according to the release. Bellaire officials considered and approved the board's solar power project in 2023.
Looking ahead
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is expected to take place Dec. 16 at City Hall to mark the official "flipping of the switch" to solar power.
