Texans will have until Oct. 7 to register to vote for the general election Nov. 5. Eligible voters in Texas will get a chance to vote for county, state and federal races.

Early voting will run from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1. Anyone who has requested a name or address change to their voter registration also has until Oct. 7 to update their voter registration status.

Staying prepared

Voters in Houston and surrounding counties can check their voter registration status and information regarding the upcoming election.

For voting locations, sample ballots and other important information leading up to Election Day, voters in the following Houston area counties can visit county websites for additional details:To register to vote, individuals must fulfill the following requirements:
  • Be a resident of county they are registering to vote in
  • Be at least 17 years and 10 months old to register, and 18 years old to vote
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Not be declared totally mentally incapacitated or partially incapacitated without the right to vote by a court
  • Not be convicted of a felony, or have fulfilled the court’s requirements after a felony conviction or received a pardon

On the website, voters can verify their registration by entering either their Voter Unique Identifier number, Texas driver's license number or their first and last names. Additionally, residents can call the voter registrar’s office in the country they reside in.

Going forward

Citizens who are not registered to vote for the upcoming election have several options to register before the deadline.
  • They can request a postage-paid application by filling out a form for a voter registration application via mail and then mail the completed application to the voter registrar in the county of residence.
  • Voter registration forms are also available at post offices, local libraries, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Health and Human Services Commission offices.
  • Voters can request an application online from the Texas Secretary of State’s office.
  • Voters in Harris County can request a voter registration form via email at [email protected]. The person making the request must provide a mailing address and phone number with the request.
  • Citizens in Harris County can visit any Harris County Tax Office to submit a completed, signed form from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • An application can be downloaded and printed in English, Spanish, Vietnamese or Chinese.
  • Voters in Harris County can call 713-274-8200 for assistance in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese.

Keep in mind

Texans who have requested a change to their name or address can update their voter registration online by visiting Texas.gov. Individuals who have updated their voter registration should receive a new voter certificate in the mail within 30 days of submitting the change.
