Memorial Park to celebrate opening of new land bridge with picnic event

More than two years after construction began on a land bridge and prairie project in Memorial Park, officials will host a picnic event to celebrate the opening of the new 100-acre space.

The land bridge travels over Memorial Drive, connecting the northern and southern portions of the park. Part of the Memorial Park Master Plan, the prairie land over the bridge provides a safe crossing for park users as well as wildlife, officials said. It also helps manage stormwater.

Drivers on Memorial Drive go through newly built tunnels that opened in 2022.

The free event—which is being called "The Biggest Picnic in Texas"—will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 11 and is open to the public. It is presented by the Kinder Foundation, a major contributor to Memorial Park, and Tellepsen, the construction company that built the bridge.

The event will feature picnic baskets provided by H-E-B while supplies last as well as food and drinks for purchase from food trucks. Other activities will include live music, face painting, self-guided tours of the land bridge and The Great Prairie Adventure, an event that involves collecting stamps in a personal passport booklet for a chance to earn a prize.

Guests are also invited to bring their own picnic supplies, although glass containers are prohibited.

The land bridge event will take place at 7575 Picnic Lane, Houston. Parking is limited, and attendees are encouraged to park off-site and use public transportation or walk to the event. A free shuttle service will run from a paid parking site at Lot H, 1643 Memorial Drive, Houston.
