Existing Montrose bikeway renamed in honor of Pat Walsh

An existing, high-comfort bikeway along Woodhead Street in Montrose will officially be renamed the Pat Walsh Memorial Bikeway after City Council members unanimously approved the name change Nov. 20.

How it happened

Bicycle enthusiasts and members of the Montrose community started advocating for the name change in early August. However, the resolution had to pass through the Bicycle Advisory Committee and Houston City Council before it could be officially designated.

The Bicycle Advisory Committee, which advises the Planning Commission and Director on bicycling issues in Houston, approved the resolution in October. City Council made the final approval on Nov. 20. According to a post by the city of Houston on X, formerly known as Twitter, the city will install commemorative signage in 2025.

Taking a step back

Pat Walsh was the former director of the Houston Planning and Development Department. He died in 2018 from brain cancer at the age of 45, according to previous Community Impact coverage.

According to Let's Talk Houston, the segment stretches from West Clay Street to Vassar Street along Woodhead Street and passes the neighborhood where Walsh's family lives.
