The Coronation Theater, a community-driven home for improv comedy, classes and corporate training in Houston, officially opened its brand-new building July 25 on Canal Street.
“Coronation has always been a labor of love,” Founder Saurabh Pande said. “At a certain point, I realized I didn’t want to do anything else—I just wanted to do improv. This new space lets us build a real home for the performers, students and audiences who are looking for something live, human and completely unrepeatable.”
What changed?
The theater relocated from its intimate 1,000-square-foot space on Rusk Street to a new 3,200-square-foot venue in the city's east end in late July.
According to a July 14 news release, the new venue features an 85-seat theater, dedicated classrooms, a full bar and kitchen with seating for 45 guests, upgraded lighting and sound, and a large meeting room that can host up to 60 people.
Pande said the expanded venue also allows the theater to run extended programming and make room for additional theater arts beyond improv, such as scripted shows, comedy-adjacent programming, sketch comedy and themed experiences. Guests can expect to see a rotating cast of six to 15 performers depending on the night, per the release.
Programming is expected to take place Tuesday through Sunday, with regular shows planned for Thursdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

In addition to the expanded showtimes and offerings, The Coronation Theater will also continue to offer classes, with approximately five to six classes per week available for beginners, working performers and "anyone looking for a creative reset," per the release. Classes are capped at 16, with diversity-based scholarships available. The new theater will also expand its corporate training and off-site offerings.
“Improv is not just about being funny,” Pande said. “It teaches people how to listen, collaborate, take risks, get comfortable being uncomfortable and trust themselves. The process is the product. In a world where so much can be automated, there is still nothing like a room full of people making something up together in real time.”
