Transportation updates: Buffalo Speedway, Safer Streets Initiative

Buffalo Speedway repaving
and drainage

The Texas Department of Transportation and the city of West University Place will hold an informational meeting for the public at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at the West University Place Community Building located at 6104 Auden St. The project will replace road surfaces and improve drainage from Bissonnet Street to Holcombe Boulevard, with visual enhancements at both entrances and at major intersections. The project is expected to have 60% of its design completed by the October meeting and will be followed by another meeting with adjacent property owners next February once 90% of the project is designed.

Timeline: Jan. 2021-TBD

Cost: $33-35 million

Funding sources: U.S. federal grant, city of West University Place

Safer Streets Initiative: Sunset, Fannin, Main streets

As part of the city’s Safer Streets Initiative, the intersections of Sunset Street with Fannin and Main streets have been identified for improvement. A joint project between the city of Houston and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County will soon be underway to modify the intersection and rebuild traffic signals. METRO covered the design costs, and construction is being paid for by Houston’s Capital Improvement Program. The Safer Streets Initiative has been underway since 2017. Road safety audits conducted in 2018 identified priority projects throughout the city.

Timeline: fall 2019-spring 2020

Cost: $900,000

Funding sources: city of Houston, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County
