The city of Grapevine is set to overhaul its traffic network after Grapevine City Council approved an over $127,000 investment to replace 45 aging signal switches across the city.
Council voted at the July 7 meeting to approve the use of the city’s capital equipment fund to replace the traffic signal switches for an amount of $127,697. This was determined to be the best product and pricing to meet the needs of the city of Grapevine, according to city documents.
The big picture
Grapevine Director of Marketing and Communications Mona Quintanilla stated that this project is not an intersection upgrade and will cause no disruption to traffic while underway.
“We are simply replacing network communication switches in various traffic cabinets,” Quintanilla said in an email. “This allows traffic to communicate with various equipment located in the traffic cabinets to make adjustments.”
Why now?
The 45 existing traffic switches are currently utilizing 10-year-old network equipment that has reached the end of its operational lifespan.
Without maintenance, the traffic signal switches will fail to maintain network connectivity, impacting cameras and signal timing systems, according to city documents.
What’s next
The city of Grapevine currently plans to have all traffic signal switch replacements done over the course of a full year, Quintanilla said. The order in which the traffic signal switches will be replaced has not been set yet.
