More than 53,000 school buses recalled nationwide, including at Grapevine-Colleyville ISD and Carroll ISD

A manufacturer for school buses has issued a recall on 53,528 buses nationwide due to safety concerns, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall notice.

The notice was issued Oct. 4 for about 1.2 million seats for failing to meet the knee impact requirements for some of their seats, officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in an email to Community Impact Newspaper.

“The lack of padding on the rear of the seat increases the risk of leg injury in the event of a crash,” the email said.

Officials from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD said seven of the district’s buses are affected by the recall. Five Carroll ISD activity buses were affected, said Julie Thannum, CISD's assistant superintendent for board and community relations.

“They [the buses] won’t have to be pulled out of the lineup but the manufacturer will take care of the recall,” Thannum said in an email.

The manufacturer, Daimler Trucks North America LLC, will notify owners, and dealers will install additional impact material on the seats free of change, the recall notice said. Bus owners will be notified of the recall by the bus builder, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

The administration encouraged the public to report any safety concerns to www.nhsta.gov or by calling the vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.

Bus owners will be notified by mail beginning no later than Dec. 2, the notice said.
