Tarrant Appraisal District to streamlines homestead exemption process

Tarrant Appraisal District, or TAD, announced a change in the homestead exemption.

A county-wide homestead audit has been completed and homeowners do not need to reapply for a homestead exemption unless they receive a notice, according to a news release.

The setup

The taxing entity required homeowners with a homestead exemption to reapply each year. Using True Roll, an audit service, the county is able to streamline the process and save time for both TAD and the taxpayers, according to a news release.

The conditions

If a homeowner has not received a letter or application from TAD, the homestead exemption remains unchanged. If a homeowner receives a notice to ask for verification, a two-page form is required to be completed. The application can also be completed online, according to a news release.

The details

There are a handful of homestead exemptions that are granted. They are:

• General residence homestead exemption
• Person age 65 or older or surviving spouse
• Disabled person or surviving spouse
• 100% disabled veteran or surviving spouse
• Donated resident of partially disabled veteran or surviving spouse
• Surviving spouse of an Armed Service Member killed in line of duty
• Surviving spouse of a First Responder killed while on duty
